By Bruce J. Schulman

Excerpt: . . . Has Rolling Stone sold out? The magazine, now part of a publishing empire that includes Us Weekly and Men’s Journal, marked its recent passage into middle age by releasing a DVD containing its entire 40-year print run in searchable digital format. “As the magazine has grown,” [founding editor Jann S.] Wenner allows in the liner notes, “it has often been the target of critics who thought we were not living up to our ideals.” For his part, the editor stands firm, daring readers to sustain that charge after perusing four decades of work—mistaken reviews, embarrassing profiles and all. . . . ¶So who got it right, Wenner or his critics? About the writer: Bruce J. Schulman, a Proof contributing editor, teaches history and American studies at Boston University. His essay on evangelical preacher Billy Sunday and the origins of Sunday baseball appeared in Proof No. 4.
